In the year or so that we have been working on a start-up focused on activity monitors and health, the wearable technology space has exploded.
This is supposed to be the next “Big Thing”.
There are estimates that the market will expand to 90-100 million devices in 2014 and that the healthcare wearable share of the market will reach $2.9 billion by 2016.
Major players have begun occupying the space and the total number of individual devices has exploded. Mainstream media including the New York Times has been devoting increasing attention to wearables and to explaining providing background and context to these devices.
However, the science of activity monitors and other wearable health devices is far less solid than the manufacturers and vendors would have us believe.
Coming from a background of research and investigation into the intricacies of activity as related to health and disease, we see a huge gap between the knowledge surrounding these devices and the promised benefits coming from these devices.
It is our hope to provide a resource for individuals and interested parties to research, compare and focus their feedback and thoughts regarding the burgeoning area of wearable technology.
As a hardware agnostic site, we endeavor to support and provide objective information and feedback that increases the value of wearable technology monitors and make these devices more meaningful to their users.
In the future, our analytics will allow individuals to compare themselves to others using standardized activity and health monitoring data, regardless of the type of wearable tech that is used.
We will also be introducing our in-house developed tools that will assist the individual in making scientifically supported health self-assessments using the wearable tech that they already possess.
