The North American Spine Society (NASS) hosts the world’s largest spine meeting each year. This year NASS 2017 will be in Orlando, Florida October 25-28. Bringing together world-leading experts from around the world, NASS 2017 is an opportunity to become exposed to the latest research, technology and developments in the field. This year, we are proud to announce Vivametrica founders Dr. Matthew Smuck, Dr. Christy Lane and Dr. Rick Hu will receive the Outstanding Paper in Surgical Science for their work in spinal stenosis. With over twenty years of experience in the field, Christy, Matt and Rick have been leading the field in research and innovation.
In this study, they looked at an objective measure of performance (physical activity) before and after surgery. Interestingly, they found that “All subjective measures improved significantly at 6 months after surgery; as did objective functional measures of capacity including balance, gait speed and ambulation distance. However, objectively measured performance (real-life physical activity) did not change following surgery.” As the first study to objectively measure post-surgical changes in people with lumbar spinal stenosis, this lays the groundwork for further investigation into how surgical outcomes affect physical performance.
